Popular Peruvian Chicken Chain Named One of D.C., Maryland, and Virginia’s Best Cheap Eats

Sardi’s Pollo A La Brasa, which operates several locations in Montgomery County, has been named one of “The Best Cheap Eats Around the DC Area” by Washingtonian.

The recently published list highlights 60 restaurants where diners can get what Washingtonian describes as a satisfying meal for less than $25 per person, excluding drinks, tax and tip. More than 200 restaurants throughout the region were considered for the list.

Washingtonian highlighted Sardi’s for its charbroiled Peruvian chicken, describing the birds as “deeply burnished” and “fall-apart.” The publication also noted the restaurant’s selection of sides, including fried Brussels sprouts, fried yuca, and rice and beans, as well as Inca Kola.

Sardi’s Pollo A La Brasa was founded in 2008 by Montgomery County cousins Phil E. Sardelis and Phil G. Sardelis. Despite their Greek heritage, the cousins shared a passion for Peruvian cuisine and created a family-friendly restaurant centered around traditional pollo a la brasa and other freshly prepared dishes.

The first Sardi’s opened in Beltsville in 2008. The company has since grown into a regional chain with locations throughout Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania.

Chicken Salad Chick Delays Olney Grand Opening

Chicken Salad Chick has delayed the grand opening of its upcoming Olney restaurant, citing an ongoing wait for electrical power. The restaurant had been scheduled to open September 23 at 18209 Olney Village Center Dr. and is now targeting mid-October.

In an update shared with customers, the restaurant expressed frustration over the delay, saying it had hoped to have power by now and had repeatedly escalated the issue through available channels.

The owners thanked the Olney Chamber of Commerce, Montgomery County Councilmember Dawn Luedtke and her staff member Aaron Kraut for their assistance in trying to resolve the situation. “We WILL OPEN…just (much) later than we had hoped,” the restaurant stated.

The Olney location is taking over the former karate studio space next to Hallmark and will be operated by franchise owners Jim Schleckser and Carrie Tydings. The restaurant previously announced a week of grand opening giveaways, including a chance for the first 100 guests in line to win free chicken salad for a year. The latest announcement did not provide revised giveaway dates or confirm whether the previously announced participation details will remain the same.

Chicken Salad Chick offers a variety of signature chicken salad flavors, along with soups, sandwiches, salads and desserts. A confirmed opening date will be shared when available.

Family-Run Restaurant’s Manoushe Named One of D.C., Maryland, and Virginia’s Best Cheap Eats

Z&Z Manoushe Bakery in Rockville has been named one of “The Best Cheap Eats Around the DC Area” by Washingtonian.

Located at 1111 Nelson Street, Z&Z specializes in manoushe, thin flatbreads that Washingtonian describes as the Levantine version of pizza. The publication highlighted the bakery’s “Lebanese bride,” topped with labneh, tomatoes, cucumbers and fresh herbs, as well as the “cocktail,” which combines melted cheese on one half with za’atar on the other.

Z&Z Manoushe Bakery, owned and operated by the Dubbaneh family, opened in September 2021 in a location with deep ties to the family. Their grandfather, Fuzzy Dubbaneh, purchased the property in 1982 after immigrating to the United States in 1979. He operated several businesses there over the years, including a deli, Chicken Delight and Chicken Tonight. The space was later home to Slice of Rockville for 11 years before Z&Z brought the location back into the family.

The restaurant grew out of the Dubbaneh family’s farmers market business and focuses on foods their grandparents ate and grew up with. The family has said its goal is to “share the extreme generosity and hospitality that exists in Arab food culture with the local community.”

The Washingtonian recognition adds to a growing list of accolades for Z&Z. Bon Appétit previously included the Rockville bakery on its list of the 50 Best New Restaurants of 2022.
